“Everybody can be great . . . because anybody can serve.”—Martin Luther King Jr.

America’s Sunday Supper
JANUARY 2013
A RETHINKCHURCH EVENT
Stepping out to address social issues boldly through community engagement

Will you join the thousands who have answered the call to serve?

Over the last two years, tens of thousands have come home from war…to heal from wounds both visible and invisible, to face unemployment, housing, and other domestic issues.

Rethink Church invites you to participate and support veterans and military families as part of a national campaign called “America’s Sunday Supper” which takes place throughout January, and honors the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service (January 21, 2013).

America’s Sunday Supper 2013 goes further to honor veterans by helping them transition from war.

Now is the time to give back! Raise awareness in your community, and do something to address the needs of veterans and military families.

Go to sundaysupperumc.org or email Rethinkchurch@umcom.org for details, ideas for engaging your community, and free resources including videos and service project ideas.

Offer a group study on Beyond the Yellow Ribbon. This book will guide your small group into thinking more about how we can receive returning troops in ways that will help them transition more effectively.

January 2013. A time to serve.

Beyond the Yellow Ribbon
Ministering to Returning Combat Veterans
With thousands of military personnel still deployed, few communities escape the direct impact of soldiers returning from war. Yet their needs and the needs of their families are often hidden in plain sight in our congregations and communities. Beyond the Yellow Ribbon identifies specific needs of veterans and their families and gives creative and practical ways your church can minister to them. A great resource for anyone serious about giving back to those who have given so much.

“You [Thompson and Wetterstrom] are plowing very important ground, and I thank you for the reminder.”—author Philip Yancey
